What is Dental Plaque and Calculus

It is necessary to know about plaque because plaque is the major factor causing various dental diseases such as gum diseases (gingivitis/gum inflammation, periodontitis/pyorrhea), tooth decay, bad mouth odour (halitosis) etc

Plaque is biofilm which is soft, sticky, colorless to plain yellow deposit which forming continually on our tooth surfaces and gums. Plaque provide hub for continuous accumulation and growth of pathogenic bacteria.

Plaque can be controlled by regular brushing and flossing of teeth and maintaining proper dietary habits.

During initial phases of formation of plaque, plaque is soft however it starts to harden within 48 hours and in about 10 days it become dental calculus which is also known as tartar.

Tartar (calculus) is formed by continual accumulation of minerals from saliva on plaque over teeth. Being rough tartar (calculus) provides ideal medium for further formation of plaque. Once deposited tartar(calculus) can’t be cleaned or removed by brushing or flossing so one has to visit dentist for cleaning of teeth professionally.

Hence, it is necessary to keep you teeth ‘plaque-free’ because plaque is the root cause for majority of dental diseases.

First of all, in order to have good dental health, you need to brush your teeth regularly preferably twice daily, one in the morning and before going to bed. Flossing your teeth once daily is also recommonded. You should maintain this routine which will be helpful at removing accumulated plaque which is harmful and notnrious at damaging your teeth and gums. Brushing also stimulates the gums which keep gums healthy.

Using toothpaste containing fluoride is helpful as flouride is important ingredient which helps to prevent cavities and tooth decay.

The other method which maintain good dental health is regular tongue cleaning with use of soft bristle toothbrush by stroking it back and forth on tongue.
Gargling and mouth rinsing with warm water after eating any food is very important so as to remove any food particles remained in mouth.

While taking your diet, care should be taken to avoid food that contains more sugar such as cake, sweets, chocolates etc.
Clean your teeth properly after consuming sticky foods like chocolates, cookies etc.

It is also advisable that you should avoid consuming tobacco products which may lead to various gum diseases and feared to lead to oral cancer.

The other most important recommonded practice that will go a long way in ensuring your all round dental health is the need to visiting the dentist on the regular basis so as to get a professional advice whether you are following right methods or not.
